I circled the block for this one - drive by this spot at least twice a day and have for the last 11 years. Today sitting there was this old car looking like it had been dipped in glass (2 coats of wax Biff? Yes Mr. McFly). The side panels reflecting The Big Four Bridge in what I would call the 5 O'Clock time change light.

For out-of-towners The Big Four (built 1895 - defunct) is being converted for walking and bikes.

The 35mm f/1.4 is dreamy.

Hershel "Woody" Williams would probably tell you that he wasn't really a bad ass at all. That he was merely a steward of The Medal of Honor for those who did not return. The first time he tried to join the Marine Corps he was told he wasn't tall enough. The next year they lowered the height requirement -lucky for them. He could not have been a more insightful, humorous or friendlier person. His time was very much appreciated.

Natural light next to a South facing window. The window had a translucent curtain that softened the light. I just kept turning his shoulders until I liked it. 50mm f/1.4 @ ISO 600 - used Topaz DeNoise 5 to zap the noise out the shadows. Besides a BW conversion no other adjustments were made.

Just a few of the 145 swim team portraits. Shooting close to wide open mostly in open shade I wanted to add a small light - shutter was way too fast to sync so I needed something continuous. I thought I needed a $400 LitePanel MicroPro but couldn't find one to try. I think I need all kinds of stuff and most times I probably don't. I ran across this palm-sized LED 120 made by an obviously self confident company called PROMASTER for less than $100. Within 5-6 feet it worked well - catch light in the eyes may seem minor but it makes a difference.

Also - Bluebell flower shots were done by holding a 50mm on backwards. Take the $600 you were saving for a 60mm Macro and buy yourself a 50mm f/1.4. You should have enough left over for 6 cases of Pabst Blue Ribbon. Throw yourself a party.

Got to fish one of the out islands - way South. Good fishing with old friends and new friends in a beautiful place. I took pictures like it was a nervous tic. The color of the water was amazing. I took way too many pictures.

It took me forever to finish this one. I find a texture or an idea, work a little bit and then put it away. Take it out a month or two later - same thing. I sketch in Photoshop using layers, photographs and a Bamboo Tablet.

This one is about a bygone summer when two photographers, both just loud mouthed kids at the time, were chased way, way out into the Kentucky countryside in the pitch black night for what was looking like our last ride in the Eldorado.

What happened when they finally collared us? They said "We just watched the Tyson fight and figured we could do you faster." It was all bark, no bite.

Bring the Noise

It happens. Not noise like in sound but noise as in, you know, the other stuff. If you don't know what it is click here but just read the first few sentences or you might nod off. I know some readers are all different skill levels but if you don't understand any of it you're still fine. Viewed at 100% it looks like the top detail of the example below - describing the top of something below doesn't sound right but that's what it is. It's like film grain. Sometimes it doesn't bother me, every now and again I like it on something but most times I don't.

I recently bought a Photoshop plug-in from TopazLabs called DeNoise 5 for about $80 and have been happy with it.

1) Works w/ Photoshop CS3-CS5 and Photoshop Elements 6-9. Free 30 day trial and I think including the words "free 30 day trial" in my blog post means they should pay me at least $80.

2) Always duplicate your layer and apply the noise filter to the duplicate so you can turn it on and off. Bring down the opacity if you need to. It can be overdone.

3) It's easy to use the way I use it. I haven't touched anything on the right side control panel and don't plan to. See - I am not selling it. They wouldn't want me to say that.

4) Don't get obsessed with it. Shooting is much more important than software or your current obsession for more pieces of bigger, brighter glass. I wrote this one as a reminder to this guy I know. I don't think you've met him. You out there - read this.

Sometimes I see somebody and I want to take their picture. I just ask - they never say no. I did get a camera smashed in my face a long time ago at the Ky. state fair but that lady told me I couldn't before I even thought of asking. I remember the image as being worth it - need to dig through some film for that well earned treasure.

Also - Working on my next blog entry but wanted to say that I was drawing that Mike Tyson tattoo on pictures of peoples faces way before Hangover 2. That was mine.

Just mirrors. For the river I used a 10 stop ND filter that is virtually opaque. Focus and meter with the filter off. Set focus to manual. My stops are set to thirds so I adjust exposure time by 30 little clicks of the wheel. ISO 200, f.22, 25sec.

Sanchez vs. Kampmann

As a side note I picked up a Lumix DMC-LX5 as a stealthy little pocket camera. Right now it's making the trip back to the Brooklyn Navy Yard. It was a great little camera but the method for extracting the RAW files was a little too cryptic, video clips required I use the Panasonic software, I found myself bumbling around with the unattached lens cap and kept accidentally switching the aspect ratio - a slider attached to the lens barrel - like I need quick access to that. Maybe I was a little quick to throw in the towel but the little things that bug you don't just go away. The next time I go to buy a camera and am given a choice of colors I should take it as a sign to pass.

My D700 is my favorite camera of all time. I actually like the lack of battery pack / motor boost on the bottom. It helps to make it look like you don't know what you are doing. Seriously.

That being said I am thinking of going through with the procedure - peek-a-boo glasses and all.

Off Broadway is actually the title of the poem that Caroll Grossman sent in to the publisher of edible Louisville. It was unsolicited and turned out to be a great little surprise. I think we all loved it. She said she had a little garden downtown and the magazine thought it might be good to have a picture to go with her poem.

Like she said it was "right down town", and at a time when I thought gardens were abandoned for watching football or some other pursuit the little plot that Caroll and her husband Harland adopted felt like a trip to the farmer's market. One of the little perks of gigs like this is meeting the people you might not have met otherwise.

This sentence originally described this years Breeder's Cup as a real barn burner but given the subject matter maybe that's not appropriate.

The weekend started with jockey Calvin Borel, a local favorite, jerking jockey Javier Castellano off the scales by his silks following what looked like a pretty bumpy race. Javier followed with a right cross and the fists started flying proving once again that if you are going to push somebody you might as well punch them in the face.

It ended with an all out stretch drive by the previously unbeaten Zenyatta that I will never forget. I had never seen the paddock like that; the cheer that went out when she first emerged from the tunnel or the way she pawed at the ground with her front hoof and rocked her head before they loaded in the gate. It was a show.

If she pulled it off I wanted a picture. There was a legion of sports photographers there and I knew my shot would pale in comparison (I am not geared for that kind of thing) but it would be mine. I had an excellent vantage point. I have tons of horse picts (one on permanent display at our exclusive airport baggage claim) but a few have special meaning to me.

Going into the first turn she was dead last. Not to worry, not to worry. At the end of the backstretch going into the third turn still dead last. Starting to worry. Through the camera I could see Mike Smith's green helmet start to move as she started to put them away by ones and by twos. Out of the last turn she swung 5 wide for some open ground and started closing on the front running Blame. The crowd was going insane. As the two passed under the wire there was the collective sigh of 74,000 people. The Hail Mary pass to win the game had just brushed the receivers finger tips. It was over.

I didn't realize until afterwards that somewhere in mid-stretch I stopped shooting. Did I need to see it with my own eyes? Maybe I just can't stand on my toes, yell at the top of my lungs and press that little button all at the same time. I need to work on that.

Eyewitness is an iPad app created by The Guardian (UK) in association with Canon. I love it. Crazy sharp, one of those things you have to see and has a button lower left that reveals a not so revealing "Pro Tip". Pretty generalized but still interesting.

ZumoCast was a free app. I can access all my picts (any file for that matter) on the ipad through a wi-fi network. I haven't figured out a way to make it practical other than lying around looking - maybe that's enough in itself. It really couldn't have been easier. Download ZumoCast and tell it what files it can show. Open the ZumoCast app in the iPad and - woop! I feel like I am pitching a commercial. Just send 4 easy payments of $19.95....blah,blah.
